This is the catalogue of director Steve McQueen, whose film 12 Years a Slave won the Academy Award for Best Picture at the 86th Academy Awards.
Steve McQueen (born in the UK, based in Amsterdam, 1969–) began creating moving image works in the early 1990s. He is now regarded as one of the most prominent contemporary artists, having received numerous accolades including the Turner Prize in 1999. This exhibition marks his first solo show in Japan. This exhibition presents Steve McQueen’s recent works, offering insight into his distinctive cinematic world. Through masterful techniques such as unique camerawork and editing, McQueen explores themes of transience and transformation, as well as the thresholds and boundaries that mark the passage from one state of being to another.
(from the exhibition introduction)
Steve McQueen addresses a wide range of subjects, from socially rooted events to deeply personal concerns, creating works using a variety of visual media, including Super 8mm and 16mm film, slides, and video. Many of his works do not have a clear story. They can be fragmented or lack a clear beginning, middle, and end. His sensitive works lead viewers to think deeply and feel connected with the images on screen.
The catalog features valuable in-depth conversations between the artist and painter Marlene Dumas (1953-) about the works, the exhibition, and various themes derived from the motifs of the pieces. Sophisticated design: The background of main text features a gradient of warm, hazy hues transitioning into cool tones, while the black cover and spine are adorned with black foil-stamped letters.
(Design by Kazuya Kondo)
This exhibition was held from May 14 to July 9, 2006 .
