Kazu Wakita was born in Tokyo in 1908 and studied the fundamentals of painting in Germany. Upon returning to Japan at the age of 22, he quickly gained recognition as a promising young artist. After the war, he became one of Japan’s leading painters, exhibiting his works both domestically and internationally. Until his passing in 2005, he continued to create art with remarkable energy. Wakita is known for his vibrant paintings featuring familiar motifs such as children, birds, and flowers. Throughout his nearly 80-year career of consistently depicting the world he loved, he continually refined and deepened his painting through the masterful composition of motifs and color fields, as well as the study of richly expressive matière. This exhibition presents works from his early years to his later period, offering a comprehensive view of the charm of Wakita’s art.

This is an exhibition catalog of Kazu Wakita (1908–2005), a painter who lived in the same era as Genichiro Inokuma and maintained a lifelong companionship with him. The catalog presents a rich collection of plates, including oil paintings, drawings, and prints from Wakita’s early years to his later works, notably featuring rare pieces from his time studying in Germany, offering a deep appreciation of the profound allure of his art through his relentless artistic exploration over an 80-year career.
