This is the catalogue for an exhibition held from April 22 to June 24, 2007, featuring works by multiple artists around the theme of “the body.”
The body, as the agent of all our activities, is inseparable from the self. Because of this profound intimacy, it is often taken for granted as something already known. Yet grasping its full scope-so rich in potential-is far from easy. This exhibition features 41 works by 16 artists, ranging from Ryūsei Kishida and Alberto Giacometti to Yasumasa Morimura. Through works that depict the human body, the exhibition invites viewers to appreciate its formal qualities while also reflecting on life and existence. In addition, by including pieces in which artists use their own bodies as a medium of expression, the exhibition seeks to explore the endless fascination the body holds.(from the exhibition introduction)
The exhibition is organized into three sections—(I) The Form of the Body, (II) Life and Existence, and (III) The Body in Dialogue—and features paintings, sculptures, photographs, and video works by artists from Japan and abroad. These works either take the body as their motif or use the body itself as a medium. Through the diverse expressions found in these works, the exhibition encourages viewers to reflect on the body not merely as a material entity with function and mass, but as a living being—one that possesses a unique form, spirit, consciousness, and a network of relationships with others. It also prompts a reconsideration of the significance of observing and re-evaluating the profound and multifaceted nature of the body from an objective standpoint.
