This is the catalogue for the exhibition Form of Time, which was held at our museum from October 26, 2008 to January 12, 2009.

Time seems to move in a single direction—neither pausing nor reversing—appearing uniform and consistent for everyone at all times. At the same time, however, each of us perceives variations in its speed and density, and by freely connecting discontinuous moments, we might be said to construct our own sense of time.

This exhibition presents a variety of forms imbued with time. Some of these forms are concrete, others are not, but all evoke a sense of time leading up to the present. Without ever fading away, they will remain within each of us, revealing how our accumulated experiences of time continue to shape who we are.

This exhibition, organized around the theme of “time,” brings together a remarkably diverse range of works. These include objects made from threads, washi paper, buttons, and beads collected from everyday living spaces; a series of clocks hung in a row within a confined space; and even a 12-meter-long tree excavated along its growth rings, revealing its former self.

They make us realize that the time we sense from them holds various expressions. Or, it could be that a certain type of universality inherent in time — flowing steadily from the past through the present and into the future — also emerges.

This catalogue features twenty works by seven artists. The full-color plates, including views of the exhibition at our museum, offer a rich visual experience.
