From Cocoons is composed of a variety of elements, centering on Meisen kimono—a type of silk kimono that was highly popular from the Meiji through the Showa era—as well as cocoons, textile and silk-reeling factories, and the landscapes of Kiryu.
Vivid, bold colors and modern designs—when Meisen kimono, which evokes the vibrant energy of a time when kimono were an integral part of everyday life and culture, is expressed through the medium of photography, what kind of presence does it take on?
Photography can only capture the surface of its subject. Yet precisely because of that, Ishiuchi believes it is possible to capture something invisible beneath the surface.
This catalog presents a multifaceted exploration of "silk," capturing not only the surface beauty of Meisen-kimono, but also the lively spirit of the women of that era and the current state of the silk industry. We invite you to experience it alongside the exhibition.
