[Exhibition Overview]
On that day, I arrived in HAWAII, a completely different world, in the morning. The blue sky felt unreal. -truly it was like stepping into another world.
—※From Genichiro Inokuma’s diary, July 20, 1974 (original text unchanged)
In 1973, following an illness, Genichiro Inokuma (1902–1993) brought an end to his two-decade-long career in New York. The following year, upon arriving in Hawaii, he was uplifted by the blue sky and resolved to begin anew, writing in his diary, In America, a first step begins again.
After setting up an atelier in Honolulu, he completed a painting in 1976 inspired by rainbows he witnessed there. From then on, he produced a series of vibrant works reflecting the influence of Hawaii’s natural beauty and his growing interest in space.
From the skyscrapers of New York to the lush nature of Hawaii, supported by this new environment, Inokuma expressed himself more freely and explored what he truly wanted to depict. This catalogue introduces his works from the Hawaiian period.
