From the late Meiji period to the early Taisho era, multiple Western painting styles were introduced to the Japanese art world simultaneously. In response, Japanese painters studied these styles, yet sought to move beyond them in pursuit of their own unique artistic expressions. This exhibition features works from the Taisho and early Showa periods, primarily drawn from the collections of the National Museum of Art, Japan (an independent administrative institution), alongside Western works that influenced Japanese artists of the time. These pieces offer a fresh look at the development of modern Western-style painting in Japan.
