In 1935, during the disputes over the reorganization of the Teiten (Imperial Art Exhibition), nine young artists — Genichiro Inokuma, Masayoshi Ise, Iwao Uchida, Ryohei Koiso, Kei Sato, Yasushi Santa, Makoto Suzuki, Toshio Nakanishi, and Kazu Wakita — decided to distance themselves from the government-run exhibitions and founded the Shinseisaku-ha-kyokai (New Creation Society, now Shinseisaku-Kyokai). They shared a belief in keeping art free from academic constraints.
Their pursuit of pure art and commitment to staying true to their artistic beliefs was well received by the media at the time. Their modern style also drew praise and was referred to as the “New Sensibility School” or the “New Lifestyle School.”
The person who provided spiritual support to the nine artists was their mentor, Takeji Fujishima. He shared their ideals and continued to contribute special works to their exhibitions — from the very first show to the eighth, held shortly before his death — offering encouragement to the young group.
