The catalog for Gamper’s first solo exhibition in Japan was published by Dent-De-Leone, a publishing house in which Gamper plays an active role. The design was handled by Åbäke, a London-based graphic collective. Their 2007 work 100 Chairs in 100 Days and its 100 Ways continues to be reprinted and can be considered an integral part of the ongoing project connected to the exhibition.
The format of the catalog is a modified A4 size, replicating the first edition of 100 Chairs in 100 Days and its 100 Ways, with one key twist: the original red thread binding has been changed to blue for this special “Marugame Edition.” Playful design elements are hidden throughout—for example, the page numbers correspond with the chairs, and pages marked “100,” which feature the 100th chairs, appear multiple times. It’s a catalog that will appeal not only to Gamper fans but also to those new to his work. Whether before or after seeing the exhibition, it’s an enjoyable read.
