This is the catalog for the exhibition Shinro Otake: NEWNEW, held from Saturday, July 13 to Sunday, November 4, 2013.
Shinro Ohtake (1955-) made a striking debut in the early 1980s and has since developed a vigorous and diverse body of work, primarily centered on painting while also incorporating sound, photography, video, print media, and other forms of expression. He is also known for his collaborations with artists from different disciplines, and his influence extends beyond the realm of contemporary art into design, literature, music, and many other fields.
This exhibition is Shinro Ohtake’s long – awaited showcase of new works, focusing on the “present” of the artist—now entering a new phase 25 years after relocating to Uwajima, Shikoku. Centering around recent works created in close dialogue with the museum’s architecture and spatial features, the show includes the newly installed MON CHERI: A Self – Portrait as a Scrapped Shed, originally presented in the forest of Kassel; a monumental six-meter-high painting titled Time Memory/Zone: and a massive installation Time Memory/ BIBAI set in the museum’s three-story atrium. The exhibition also features the ongoing the Time Memory series, which Ohtake began in 2011, as well as new works from the Boundary Color series created using gouache. True to the title “NEWNEW,” the exhibition centers on new and never-before-seen-in-Japan works.
